Skill Team Leader - Applications
AVL Test Systems Inc. is looking for a Skill Team Leader - Applications Engineering to add to the North America team. This leadership role will focus on AVL’s EV market including but not limited to battery testing/emulation, inverter, eMotor and eAxle testing. In addition, this is a management position and will lead the Application Engineering team. Qualified candidates must possess a minimum of 3-5 years' of relevant experience in EV. This experience could include component level battery experience and/or electrification experience. As this position is a management role, direct management or strong leadership experience will be required.
The role requires system knowledge at an expert level and is an opportunity to be a part of a the fast-developing topic of inverter and E-Motor for electric vehicles. The Skill Team Leader Application will design, integrate subsystems and commission test systems to meet complex testing requirements. In addition, they will troubleshoot complex problems and develop solutions. Qualified candidates should have working experience in the automotive industry as well as a high electrical aptitude to succeed in the position. Candidates must be able to take charge of projects and drive to completion while working with a Project Manager to manage cost and time estimates. The Skill Team Leader Application will have ownership of large complex test systems and must have excellent customer service and communication skills.
- Travel for the position will be approximately 40-60%
- Candidates should be located in southeast MI area or in Southern California

ROLES:
The Skill Team Leader – Applications provides the required mentoring, and technical leadership to the Application Engineering Team necessary to execute customer projects and customer service activities containing commissioning and/or applications engineering.
The specific roles of a Skill Team Leader - Applications include:
- Responsible for the development of expertise, methods, and tools within the skill team
- Provides technical support to team members
- Monitors application and project work for compliance with engineering principles, company standards, maintainability and customer requirements
- Conducts Performance Appraisals of assigned team member and sets personnel goals in conjunction with Director, Commissioning & Process Management
- Establish training/mentoring plan for each team member
- Ensure closed lessons learned loop from employee to organization
- Support of the operations business as needed to bridge resource bottlenecks and to teach new employees through on-the-job training
- Commission test systems including:
- Setup and troubleshoot test and measurement systems
- Implement and tune complex control loops
- Integrate auxiliary equipment into test systems
- Setup monitoring and control of relevant safeties
- Create commissioning documentation
- Provide training on system applications
- Obtain customer sign-off
- Other duties as required to ensure project success
QUALIFICATIONS/SKILLS:
A Skill Team Leader - Application is expected to have demonstrated abilities in the following areas:
Commercial
- Efficient on time delivery of project expectations with consistently high feedback
- Execute annual review of assigned team members
Technical
- Identify, initiate and support opportunities for technology development, process improvements, tool development, and knowledge capture and re-use.
- Detail knowledge of customer base and customer applications and needs
- In depth understanding of electrical and mechanical processes
- Expertise related to testing methods and applications
- Strong software adaption and modification skills
- Background in internal combustion engines, powertrain, electrification or mobility research
- Thorough knowledge of PC operation, structure, MS Windows, and computer networking required
- Personal protection equipment training
Relational
- Leadership of small to medium size technical teams
- Working effectively with customers and other program staff and team members
- Accountability for team and individual delivery
- Active pursuit of personal and departmental improvement
- Effective communication with all levels of the project team
Experience and Education
- Bachelors’ degree in engineering or equivalent
- Master’s degree in engineering or equivalent preferred
- 10+ years’ experience in related field.
- 5+ years’ experience in test automation equipment preferred.
- 1-2+ years of supervisory experience.
- Demonstration of technical leadership on customer projects
