Fabricator - Vehicle Engineering (Part-Time)

AVL Mobility Technologies, Inc. is looking to a fill a part-time opportunity supporting our Vehicle team primarily from one of our Plymouth, MI locations. 

 

The Fabricator - Vehicle will support fabrication, instrumentation, and testing requirements for vehicle testing and vehicle integration projects.  This position will instrument, configure, and execute benchmarking either according to AVL internal procedure or customer specific procedure.  Responsibilities include R&R of powertrain components, modification of components to accommodate required sensors, prepping vehicle for testing, installing sensors and obtaining required CAN messages, data integrity check, troubleshooting and data acquisition while driving a matrix of specific maneuvers. Provides support for vehicle build projects as required.

Responsibilities:

  • Conducts routine maintenance on equipment, vehicles, etc. following established schedules and procedures.
  • Fabricates vehicle and testing components following blueprints, engineering schematics, equipment manuals, handwritten or drawn notes.
  • Provide vehicle build support in terms of powertrain installation, system integration and fabrication to support the build requirements.
  • Engages in safe work practices and advises supervisor on improvements to test equipment fabrication, installation, and operation to ensure a safe laboratory operation.
  • Performs test equipment inspection and verification prior to use.
  • Instruments vehicles per AVL process or customer specific process in a tidy, organized manner.
  • Performs AVL or customer specific driving maneuvers as part of the benchmark.
  • Troubleshoot issues related to signal quality and AVL-DRIVE software and hardware or other related vehicle testing tools.
  • Provides feedback on subjective impressions during benchmark, software issues or constraints and suggestions for overall increased benchmarking efficiency.
  • Practices professional and timely completion of benchmarking summary reports and other administrative responsibilities.
  • Actively participates in developing one’s own training plan and exhibits ownership in completing training towards realization of selected diplomas and competency.
  • Completes and maintains all applicable safety training and track training.

 

Qualifications:

  • High School diploma or equivalent education
  • Bachelors’ degree preferred.
  • 1-5+ years continuing education, or trade school and/or related experience is required.
  • Must be able to read and follow schematics; equipment manuals; blueprints and drawings
  • Demonstrated ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
  • Has knowledge of tasks associated with the technical work area; technical jargon; welding equipment
  • Basic understanding of metallurgy
  • MIG welding ferrous metals
  • TIG welding ferrous and nonferrous metals
  • Operation or hand operated cutting, drilling, and grinding tools
  • Operation of stationary cutting, drilling, grinding, shearing, and bending tools
  • Operation of hydraulic press
  • Crane training
  • Forklift training
  • Hazardous communication training
  • Lock out/tag out training
  • Personal protective equipment training
  • Compressed gas training
  • SPCC training
  • Hazardous waste training
  • Process water system awareness training
  • Exhaust system awareness training
  • Welding training
  • Vehicle testing background with emphasis on data acquisition required
  • Practical vehicle experience
  • Digital signal processing and data acquisition knowledge
  • Basic computer knowledge with ability to learn new programs (i.e. AVL-DRIVE, ATI)
  • Ability to multi-task
  • Ability to support effective team environment
  • Able to work independently with little supervision
  • Ability to diagnose and perform root cause analysis
