Department Manager - Development

The AVL MTI team is searching for a key leadership position to be located in Plymouth, MI. This Department Manager opportunity be responsible for Performance, Emissions & In-Vehicle Calibration, Compliance & Standardization, and Advanced Systems Simulation & Application Integration. This position is a leadership role, also supporting business development and customer interface. The Department Manager manages a team of 20+ engineers. The Department Manager role requires a minimum of 4+ years direct supervisory/management experience; preferably 7+ years. Leadership and mentoring skills will be key to ensuring the team is operating effectively and understands the direction of their team and AVL MTI. In addition, strong communication skills are required to support internal collaboration across the MTI team and North America organization, in addition to AVL globally. Customer interfacing, technical discussions and support of proposals for customers will be required.
Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis or be eligible for an L Visa. Employer will not sponsor an applicant for a work visa beyond an L Visa for this position. To qualify for an L Visa, you must minimally be an AVL employee (employed for 1+ year by the affiliate location) and possess a bachelors degree or equivalent.
Roles:
- Supervises department members.
- Coordinates activities concerned with technical developments, scheduling, and resolving engineering design and test issues.
- Reviews project for compliance with engineering principles, company standards, and customer requirements, reports on progress to management.
- Plans and formulates engineering program according to project requirements.
- Leads specific phases or aspects of projects such as technical studies, design, preparation of specifications and technical plans, and testing.
- Manages project work within specific deadlines.
Qualifications/Skills:
- 10+ years of relative experience
- 4+ years of supervisory experience, 7+ years preferred
- Bachelor’s degree required in area of expertise
- Masters’ degree preferred
- Leadership and Mentoring Skills
- Working effectively with customers and other program staff and team members
- Accountability for individual and team delivery
- Active pursuit of personal and departmental improvement
- Effective communication with all levels of the team and customer
