Application Engineer Specialist - Emissions
AVL Test Systems Inc. is seeking an experienced Application Engineering Specialist to join our advanced powertrain and emissions testing team. This is a senior technical role requiring expert-level system knowledge and the ability to design, integrate, commission, and optimize complex test systems for engine, emissions, powertrain, and vehicle testing applications.
The Application Engineering Specialist will lead the on-site commissioning and deployment of sophisticated testing solutions focused on emissions applications development and regulatory criteria for; engine and chassis dynamometer testing. This individual serves as a trusted technical advisor to customers, takes ownership of large-scale projects, and works closely with Project Managers to ensure successful execution while maintaining project schedules and cost objectives.
Success in this role requires a strong combination of technical expertise, customer-facing leadership, project ownership, and the ability to develop innovative solutions to complex engineering challenges. Beyond the technical responsibilities, this position requires a professional who consistently acts in the best interest of the customer and AVL, demonstrates sound judgment, and takes initiative to drive projects to successful completion.

Roles:
- Act as the primary technical liaison and company representative to customers.
- Lead commissioning activities for complex engine, emissions, powertrain, and chassis dynamometer test systems.
- Develop, validate, and execute complex custom test procedures and automated test sequences.
- Evaluate emissions testing and powertrain performance data and provide technical recommendations.
- Integrate emissions analyzers, fuel conditioning systems, air handling systems, dynamometers, and auxiliary equipment into complete test cell solutions.
- Troubleshoot electrical, mechanical, controls, software, and application-related issues on customer test systems.
- Provide advanced technical support to Project Engineering, Sales, Service, and Customer Support organizations.
- Develop and deliver advanced technical training to customers and internal personnel.
- Conduct technical research and support the development of new testing methodologies and applications.
- Take ownership of large, complex test systems and drive projects to successful completion while supporting schedule and cost objectives.
- Travel as required to support customer projects.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications/Skills:
- Bachelor's degree in Engineering or equivalent technical discipline. (Master's preferred)
- 7+ years of experience in emissions testing, engine testing, powertrain development, and related emissions testing applications.
- Experience with emissions legislation testing, certification testing, or calibration activities.
- Strong understanding of internal combustion engines, emissions systems, and powertrain development processes.
- Knowledge of aftertreatment systems, emissions measurement equipment, and powertrain controls.
- Demonstrated experience commissioning, integrating, or troubleshooting complex testing systems.
- Expertise in testing methodologies, instrumentation, controls, and data acquisition systems.
- Strong software adaptation, configuration, and troubleshooting skills.
- Ability to mentor engineers and technicians through technical leadership and advanced training.
- Knowledge of PC architecture, Microsoft Windows operating systems, and industrial networking.
- Excellent written, verbal, presentation, and customer communication skills.
- Ability to independently lead customer-facing technical projects and make sound engineering decisions under pressure.
- Travel approximately 40%-60%.
