PLC Commissioning & Service Engineer

Our projects range from single system upgrades up to complete development facilities, working with automotive, formula 1, commercial vehicle and other high technology customers. Contract values range from tens of thousands of pounds to over £20 million.

 

General Description

To maintain, repair, calibrate and service AVL or competitor equipment at customer’s sites within the UK or within the Hartlebury workshop of AVL-UK. To commission at UK customer’s sites AVL products, test facilities or contractually defined equipment and / or services. To ensure that operation and handover to the client meets the specifications defined by AVL & the Customer.

 

Main Duties, Operational Tasks and Responsibilities

  • To travel to customer’s sites to carry out front line fault analysis and, where possible repair of AVL equipment in line with contractual obligations in accordance with instruction from the Hot Line system co-ordinator.
  • To travel to customers sites as reasonably required to fulfil the service/commissioning role.
  • To assist in the in-house testing of AVL equipment prior to site installation and commissioning.
  • To work closely with AVL project managers, designers and sub-contractors throughout the project phase to provide input to the best methodologies and idea’s on function, safety and costs for test plant and services.
  • To work closely with AVL project managers and installation staff to ensure that AVL plant is commissioned efficiently, meets operational specification and that the work is completed within project time scales and budgets.
  • To take ownership of site activities following installation and bring into operation AVL test plant and support services both at AVL and customer’s sites within the UK.
  • To document and record all parameters and activities and produce handover documentation in line with AVL processes with regard to AVL supplied equipment and facilities.
  • To ensure that service/commissioning of AVL plant and service is carried out safely and to that end be actively involved in risk analysis and enforcement of safe working practices at all times.
  • To keep detailed daily records of all work carried out while working on commissioning/service jobs and maintenance contracts utilising the AVL software tools and upon request produce detailed technical reports. 
  • To maintain accurate records of resource and costs used in the commissioning of plant and to assist the Project manager in obtaining the customers signed acceptance of the contracted work.
  • When allocated to the workshop by Hot Line system co-ordinator, to carry out inspection, testing, calibration, maintenance or repair of AVL instruments based at the Hartlebury work-shop of AVL-UK to the priorities set by the SVM.
  • With support of AVL-UK management & the AVL Skills Initiative to maintain and develop personal skills in the wide range of technologies involved in test facilities.
  • To establish and maintain good working relationships with colleagues and customers. The SVE will be the AVL representative on Customer sites and must portray the professional image of the company so he/she must act accordingly at all times.
  • To provide, if requested, technical Hot Line phone support to the service department for the resolution of site related problems.
  • To work strictly within the processes and procedures of AVL-UK and to work for the continuous improvement of the AVL Customer Services Area.
  • To actively support safe working practices both within the home site and at Customer’s sites.
  •  To be flexible in their working role & assist in any AVL related work issues within their individual skills set.
  •  Ability to work to deadlines & complete all internal paperwork within the required time frame set by SVM.
  • To carry out any other duties as reasonably required commensurate with the nature of the job and level of responsibility

 

Requirements of the Job

  • Siemens S7 PLC programming background essential.
  • Strong background in fault finding and diagnosing PLC based automation systems.
  • Experienced with tuning PLC closed loop control systems. 
  • Educated up to minimum of HND level in electronics or equivalent demonstrated experience.
  • Automotive or Electrical Engineering background is preferred.
  • Excellent diagnostic skills and an ability to work unsupervised under pressure
  • Good interpersonal skills with all levels of customer’s and employer’s staff.
  • Full Driving License.
  • Needs to be a Team Player and willing to accept responsibility within the role.
  • Commitment, Flexibility, Self-Motivation and a passion for the role are necessary attributes for this position
