We offer the following research topic

Thesis - Experimental Determination of Thermophysical Parameters of Li-ion Battery Cells

Master Thesis

We are looking for a motivated student to conduct their Master Thesis in the area of experimental battery characterization. The thermophysical properties of Li-ion battery cells, such as thermal conductivity and specific heat capacity, are essential input parameters for accurate thermal simulations and safety assessments.
The scope of the thesis includes the identification and application of suitable measurement methods (e.g., Heat Flow Meter or others) to determine these parameters under controlled conditions. In addition to baseline measurements, the work will explore how these properties vary depending on factors such as cell type, state of charge (SoC), aging condition, temperature, and external pressure. The results will contribute to a deeper understanding of battery behavior and improve the accuracy of simulation models used in safety and performance assessments.

YOUR RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Conduct a literature review on thermophysical property measurement techniques for battery cells
  • Select and set up appropriate experimental methods for thermal conductivity and specific heat capacity determination
  • Perform measurements under varying conditions (e.g., SoC, temperature, pressure, aging)
  • Analyze the variability of thermophysical parameters across different cell types and conditions
  • Document and present findings with recommendations for simulation input parameters

YOUR PROFILE:

  • Ongoing studies in the field of technical or natural science studies (physics, mechanical engineering, materials science or similar)
  • Interest in experimental work and battery technology
  • Experience in laboratory measurements and data analysis is beneficial
  • Highly developed quality awareness with strong attention to detail
  • High level of self-reliance with the ability to work in a team, as well as autonomously
  • Fluent English language skills are essential; fluent German is beneficial
  • For this thesis is your presence at our headquarter in Graz required

WE OFFER:

  • You can write your thesis independently and receive professional guidance and support from our experienced employees.
  • You will have the opportunity to exchange ideas with experts in the company and benefit from their expertise.
  • Take the opportunity to immerse yourself in the world of AVL and embed your theoretical knowledge in a practical environment.

The successful completion of the thesis is remunerated with a one-time fee of EUR €3,500.00 before tax.

You don't want to write your final thesis just for the books, then explore the mobility of the future together with us! Maybe you will be a part of it soon!
