Thesis - Optical based Visibility/Fog Determination in the field of ADAS/AD
Master Thesis
Environmental and weather conditions are crucial influence parameters on advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) and autonomous driving (AD). To evaluate their performance regarding perception and safety it is important to not only acquire ADAS/AD sensor data (from Radar, Lidar, Camera, etc.) but also environmental conditions. Optical based system, and in particular cameras, rely on good visibility conditions. Crucial sources of impairment of visibility are fog, mist or haze which reduce the so called meteorological optical range (MOR).
TASK:
- Research on meteorological basics of visibility sensing and Time-of-Flight (ToF) technologies
- Derivation of a correlation hypothesis between Meteorological Optical Range (MOR) and a ToF response (analytically and with simulations)
- Design of experiment (DoE) of a fog measurement environment in the Lab (partly existing)
- Analysis of the measured results and validation of the depeveloped correlation hypothesis using a reference Visibility sensor; Validation in road test campains under real conditions on the vehicle if possible
REQUIREMENTS:
- Skills in physics / optics / data analytics
- Electrical & mechanical engineering experience and Knowhow with ToF technologies advantageous
- Programming skills in Matlab or Phyton
- For laboratory analysis your presence in Graz is required
PREFERRED FIELD OF STUDY:
- Physics / Meteorology
- Electrical / Mechanical / Automotive Engineering
- Telematics / Informatics
