Technical Specialist - Transmission Calibration

AVL is looking for an expert in transmission calibration to join our Plymouth, MI team.  An individual who enjoys focusing on technical, in addition to providing guidance/mentorship to others is ideal for this opportunity.  The working location for this opportunity will be primarily offsite at a customer location in the Plymouth/Ann Arbor area. The Technical Specialist provides technical & program expertise to support all areas and cross-functional engineering program activities.  The Technical Specialist - Transmission Calibration position is required to possess a degree in Mechanical Engineering or related.  In addition, experience in transmission calibration development and a solid understanding of automotive systems detail and integration.  As this position will interface directly with a variety of customers, strong communication skills (both written and verbal) are also required.

ROLES:

The Transmission Calibration Skill Team provides transmission and e-axle calibration expertise to projects. 

 

The specific roles of a Transmission Calibration Engineer in this effort include:

  • Defines, plans, and performs transmission and vehicle calibration and other relevant engineering project work within project team as required.
  • Plans and manages engineering resources according to project requirements.
  • Works on specific phases or aspects of projects such as technical studies, preparation of specifications, technical plans, engine testing, vehicle testing, data analysis and validation.
  • Supports/ensures data quality and writes technical project reports. 
  • Reviews technical project reports written by Project Engineer I / II and instructs on proper report standards.
  • Reviews project for compliance with engineering principles, company standards, and customer requirements, including opinions and interpretations.
  • Coordinates activities concerned with technical development, scheduling, and resolving engineering test issues.
  • Defines, executes, and supports research and development activities.
  • Supports, organizes, and leads customer meetings.
  • Supports customer calibration trips as required.
  • Other duties as required to ensure project success.
 

 

QUALIFICATIONS/SKILLS:

A Technical Specialist is expected to have demonstrated abilities in the following areas:

Technical 

  • Identify, initiate, and support opportunities for technology development, process improvements, tool development, and knowledge capture and re-use.
  • Provide effective mentorship for other departmental staff in areas of expertise
  • Familiarity with regulatory and market segment requirements and end-user expectations
  • Familiarity with regulatory and market segment requirements and end-user expectations

 

Calibration and/or development experience with two or more of this type of drivetrains:

  • Automatic Step Gear
  • Dry Dual Clutch
  • Wet Dual Clutch
  • CVT
  • Automated manual
  • e-Axles

 

Independent functionality in at least three of the following areas:

  • Vehicle and/or transmission calibration optimization to meet fuel economy and emissions.
  • Vehicle and/or transmission development trip support for hot weather, cold weather and high altitude.
  • Vehicle and/or transmission drivability calibration
  • Transmission OBD Diagnostic Controls development and Calibration
  • Electrified trans/drive component calibration and testing (e-Axles, etc.)

  • Working effectively with customers and other program staff and team members

  • Program and resource coordination
  • Active pursuit of personal and departmental improvement
  • Effective communication with all levels of the program team

 

Commercial

  • Quote Leader for a medium/large size program.
  • Support the Business Development process for specific clients.
  • Efficient on time delivery of program expectations with consistently high feedback.
  • Active involvement in Annual Review and Work Planning Process.

 

Experience and Education

  • 7+ years’ experience in area of expertise
  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering / Mechanical Engineering or related field required
  • Master’s degree in Engineering preferred
